Will's Story
My name is Will. I am 16 years old and I have a cleft lip and
palate. There are many positive and negative consequences to having
a cleft. However, in today’s society, it is a constant struggle
to fit in. When I walk into a mall people might look at me once
then turn away, but there are some who persist and follow me around
without realizing how much it hurts me. When people follow me or
stare I try to ignore them. It’s the best thing you
can do.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend Trailblazers, a retreat
for teens with facial differences, sponsored by AboutFace. I have
never been happier to be me! I was reluctant to go at first, but
with the encouragement of my dentist and family, I decided to give
it a try. I was nervous because I didn’t know anyone and
I didn’t know what to expect. I have learned to embrace my
cleft, and want very much to use my knowledge and experience to
help others overcome their fears and worries; the camp gave me
this opportunity.
At Trailblazers, I met some wonderful people. I allowed my true
self to shine. I love drama and theatrics and I love to make others
laugh. We had so much fun talking and sharing our experiences.
We played trust games and team building exercises. We performed
some amazing tasks like high ropes, rock climbing, kayaking. I
am not an athletic person, but with the support and encouragement
of my new friends, I was able to push myself to achieve some incredible
triumphs! You never know what you can do until you try! I did cross
the high ropes! I did reach the top of the rock wall! I did meet
great people.
At night, when we were all together around the camp fire, we shared
some laughs, some tears, and many wonderful stories. Today, my
camp friends and I talk via email and through AboutFace we plan
other activities we can do together. I am looking forward to going
back to camp next year. There will be no hesitation!
