Facing Differences

Facing Differences is an interactive resource designed for children ages 8 to 12. The independent format (video and program guide with student activities) provides educators accessibility and flexibility to direct learning on diversity issues within their classroom, exploring the common thread of physical differences that weaves across many types of distinctions – disabilities, race, ethnicity, gender and body types.

The program video is narrated by Paul Stanley, lead singer of the legendary rock band KISS and Spokesperson for AboutFace. Paul guides our cast of children and the student viewing audience through key program concepts of curiosity, appearance, first impressions, responsibility and respect. Students are taught how to apply these ideas to people and are introduced to a young girl with a facial difference.

The program guide supports educators in preparing students to view the video. It includes curriculum links and resources for teachers and extensive introductory and follow-up activities for children in grades 2 to 6. The grade specific activities have been designed by educators to reinforce key learning objectives and stimulate meaningful discussion.

What Kids said about Facing Differences.....

“It doesn’t matter what peoples’ faces look like. It matters what’s in their hearts.”

“I know what it feels like to be called names. I learned from Facing Differences that people aren’t really looking at what’s inside of me.”

“I think Facing Differences changed the way I look at other people.”

What Teachers said about Facing Differences.....

“Facing Differences really helped to dispel stereotypes. I will definitely use it again.”

“The program is realistic in that it acknowledges that all children will have questions when they meet someone who looks different. Facing Differences raises these issues and gives kids a step-by-step approach to follow when meeting someone who is physically different.”

“The video is excellent and the teaching ideas are very helpful. It was a great experience to share ideas and develop new activities within our school.”
